The MTG opening hand calculator uses exact hypergeometric probability and reproduces every published landmark, including the famous 39.95 percent chance of drawing at least one of a four-card playset in an opening seven. Nothing is ever due

The most useful thing in this whole category is a correction to how people think about randomness. A 2 percent drop rate does not become more likely because you have failed fifty times. The random number generator has no memory of your afternoon and owes you nothing. Half of players get the drop within 35 attempts, and about one in 2.7 walk away with nothing after fifty, and both of those facts are consequences of the same arithmetic.

Certainty is also expensive in a way that surprises people: getting from a 90 percent chance to a 99 percent chance costs about as many additional attempts as getting from zero to 90 did, because each attempt removes a fraction of the remaining failure rather than a fixed amount.

If a drop rate is 2 percent, am I guaranteed it in 50 tries?

No. At a 2 percent rate, fifty attempts gives you about a 63.6 percent chance, not a certainty. You would need 114 attempts for 90 percent and 228 for 99 percent. Nothing is ever due: previous failures do not improve your odds on the next attempt, because each one is independent.

Is the multiply-by-seven dog years rule wrong?

Yes, though it is a reasonable rough guide in the middle of a dog's life. Dogs mature very quickly in their first two years and then age more slowly, and the relationship also varies with breed size. Our dog years calculator uses the non-linear relationship rather than the folklore multiplier.

Is the random number generator genuinely random?

It uses your browser's built-in random number generator, which is fine for games, picking names, and settling arguments. It is not cryptographically secure and should not be used for anything where the outcome needs to resist a determined attacker, such as generating passwords or keys.
