How this road trip calculator works
You already have a drive time. Google gave it to you, confidently, down to the minute. And you already know, from every road trip you have ever taken, that the number is a lie of omission: it assumes you never buy gas, never eat, and never hear "I have to go NOW" from the back seat. The gap between the dashboard ETA and the time you actually pull into the driveway is not traffic. It is stops, and nobody models them. So we did.
Give this calculator the distance and drive time from your maps app and tell it who is in the car. It counts your fuel stops, meal stops, and comfort stops, prices each one in minutes, and hands back the realistic door-to-door time, the honest gap versus the maps ETA, your average speed once stopping is included, and (if you give it a departure time) the arrival you can actually text to whoever is waiting. If you left the drive time blank, we estimate it from your distance at the average speed you pick and label it clearly as an estimate; your maps app knows your real route, so use its number when you have it.
The stop model, with every assumption on the table
Meal stops = floor(drive hours / 4), capped at 3
Comfort stops = floor(drive hours / 2.5) - stops already planned (never below 0), +1 with kids, +1 with a dog
Real trip time = drive time + all stop minutes
Here is the reasoning behind each line, because an estimate you cannot inspect is just a guess with confidence. Fuel stops: you leave with a full tank and you do not run it to empty, so we assume you use 85 percent of your range between fills. If the whole trip fits inside one tank or charge, that is zero stops. Each stop defaults to 12 minutes; EV drivers should raise that to their real charging time, which is exactly why the field is editable. Meal stops: one for every 4 full hours of driving, capped at 3 because even the hungriest crew consolidates on a long haul. Drive-through costs 20 minutes, sit-down costs 45, and packed food costs zero stops, which is the single biggest time lever on this whole page. Comfort stops: people need a break about every 2.5 hours, so we count those natural break points and subtract the stops you are already making for fuel and food (you combine them; everyone does). Then we add one extra stop if there are kids aboard and another if there is a dog, because dogs and kids do not sync their needs, and pretending they will has ruined more schedules than road construction. Every per-stop duration is an input, not a decree: change them and the whole result recalculates.
One honest caveat, stated plainly: traffic, weather, and toddler meltdowns are extra. This model is a floor, not a ceiling. If the result says 10h 24m, plan for 10h 24m as the good outcome.
Why we do not use a maps API
This was a deliberate choice, not a missing feature. Every route planner that talks to a maps service sends your route somewhere: origin, destination, dates, sometimes your whole itinerary. Yours is nobody's business but yours. Nothing you type on this page leaves your browser; the math runs right here on your device. And practically speaking, we do not need your route. You already have the best drive time available, on your phone, computed by a company with a satellite fleet. What that company will not tell you is what happens to its number once real humans get in the car. That layer, the realism layer, is the value here, and it works the same whether you are driving to Tulsa or somewhere you would rather not put in a text box.
Worked example
The family classic: 600 miles, Google says 9h 0m, a 350 mile tank, 2 adults, 2 kids, and the dog, eating drive-through.
Fuel: 600 miles is more than one tank. At 85 percent of range between fills (297.5 mi), ceil(600 / 297.5) - 1 = 2 stops at 12 min = 24 min. Meals: floor(9 / 4) = 2 drive-through stops at 20 min = 40 min. Comfort: floor(9 / 2.5) = 3 natural break points, minus the 4 stops already planned leaves 0, plus 1 for the kids and 1 for the dog = 2 stops at 10 min = 20 min.
Total stopped time: 24 + 40 + 20 = 84 minutes across 6 stops. Google says 9h 0m; with this crew it is realistically 10h 24m, and the average speed including stops drops to about 57.7 mph. Leave at 8:00 AM and you arrive around 6:24 PM, not 5:00. Now you know which number to text ahead.
Road trip tips that actually save time
Three moves cover most of it. Fuel up the night before: starting full is what makes the first 300 miles stop-free, and the model assumes you did. Combine stops ruthlessly: eat where you fuel, walk the dog where you eat, and make every stop a full-service stop where everyone tries the bathroom whether they think they need it or not. A combined stop costs you once; three separate ones cost you three off-ramps, three parking lots, and three rounds of reboarding negotiations. Pack food if you are racing daylight: switching from sit-down meals to a cooler of packed food removes entire stops from the ledger, which on a long day can mean arriving before dark instead of after.
