How the pan size converter works

A recipe is built for a specific amount of batter spread over a specific pan area. Swap the pan without checking the area first, and the same batter ends up shallower or deeper than the recipe assumed, which changes how it bakes. This tool computes both pans' areas, the scaling factor between them, and tells you in plain words what that factor means for depth and bake time.

The formula

Round pan area = π × radius²   Square or rectangular pan area = length × width

Radius is half the diameter. The batter-scaling factor between two pans is simply the target pan's area divided by the original pan's area.

Worked example

Swapping a 9-inch round pan for a 9x13 rectangular pan:

9-inch round area = π × 4.5² = π × 20.25 = 63.62 sq in

9x13 area = 9 × 13 = 117 sq in

Scaling factor = 117 ÷ 63.62 = 1.84, so the 9x13 is 83.9 percent bigger. That is a large jump: expect a noticeably shallower bake and start checking well before the original recipe's time.

Kitchen folklore says two 8-inch round pans hold "about the same" as one 9x13. The real numbers: two 8-inch rounds combine for 100.5 sq in, against 117 sq in for the 9x13. That is 14 percent short, close enough that most layer cake recipes still work split between the two rounds, but not the exact equivalence the folklore implies. If your recipe is depth-sensitive (a dense cheesecake-style batter, for instance), the gap is worth respecting.

Depth matters too, not just area

Area tells you how the batter spreads out, but it does not tell you the whole story. Two pans with identical area can hold very different volumes if one is an inch deeper than the other, and that extra inch of depth is not free: it changes how far heat has to travel to reach the center and how long the middle takes to set before the edges overbake. If your area comparison shows more than about a 25 percent difference, treat the swap as a genuinely different bake rather than a like-for-like substitution, and consider scaling the batter itself with the recipe scaler instead of forcing the original quantity into a very different pan. Almost, but not quite: two 8-inch rounds hold about 100.5 square inches of batter area combined, while a 9x13 holds 117 square inches. That is 14 percent more area in the 9x13, so it is close enough for many recipes but not an exact swap. Expect a slightly thinner layer of batter and check for doneness a few minutes early. The old kitchen folklore that they are equivalent overstates it.

What happens if I use a pan with a lot more area than the recipe calls for?

The same amount of batter spreads thinner, so it bakes faster and can come out drier or less tall than intended. Start checking doneness 5 to 8 minutes early for every 20 to 25 percent of extra area, and expect a shorter, wider result rather than the recipe's original shape.

What happens if my new pan has less area than the original?

The batter sits deeper, so the center takes longer to bake through while the edges are already done. If the depth difference is large, tent the top with foil partway through to stop the edges from overbaking while the center catches up, and add extra time.

How do I calculate the area of a round cake pan?
