How height conversion works

Since the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959, one inch has been defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters — not approximately, exactly. So converting cm to feet and inches (or feet and inches back to cm) is exact arithmetic; the only thing that ever differs between charts is how much they round at the end. This converter works in both directions and shows the unrounded figures alongside the everyday rounded ones.

The formula

total inches = cm ÷ 2.54
feet = whole part of (total inches ÷ 12), inches = the remainder
cm = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54

Here cm is the height in centimeters, feet and inches are the imperial pair, and 2.54 is the exact number of centimeters in one inch.

Worked examples — both directions

Feet & inches → cm: 5 ft 10 in = 70 inches, and 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm (1.778 m) — exactly.

cm → feet & inches: 172 cm ÷ 2.54 = 67.72 inches = 5 ft 7.72 in, which rounds to 5 ft 8 in.

Why your ID may not agree with this calculator

Two reasons. First, rounding conventions: a US driver's license records whole inches, a European passport whole centimeters, and each office rounds however the measuring clerk feels like — so 179 cm can legitimately appear as 5′10″ on one document and 5′11″ on another. Second, you genuinely aren't one fixed height: the discs in your spine compress under gravity through the day, so most people measure roughly a centimeter taller in the morning than in the evening. If a precise figure matters, measure at a consistent time of day and keep the unrounded value — this converter gives it to you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert cm to feet and inches?

Divide the centimeters by 2.54 to get total inches, then divide by 12: the whole number is feet and the remainder is inches. For example, 175 cm ÷ 2.54 = 68.9 inches = 5 ft 8.9 in, usually rounded to 5′9″.

How many cm is 5 feet 10 inches?

5 ft 10 in is 70 inches, and 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm (about 1.78 m). Because an inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, this is an exact result, not an approximation.

How tall is 180 cm in feet?

180 cm is 70.87 inches, or 5 ft 10.87 in — almost always rounded to 5′11″. As a decimal it is about 5.906 feet.

Is an inch exactly 2.54 centimeters?

Yes. The International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959 defined the inch as exactly 2.54 cm for the US, UK, and Commonwealth countries. Every cm-to-inches conversion since then is exact by definition — only the rounding varies.

Why do different charts give me a slightly different height?

Rounding. 170 cm is exactly 5 ft 6.93 in, so some charts call it 5′7″ while stricter ones list 5′6.9″. IDs like passports and driver's licenses usually round to the nearest whole inch or centimeter, which can shift a listed height by up to half an inch.
